The Lord has bigger plans for us than I thought

How are ya? :D It was great to hear from you today! We had various dendo activities this morning, and so we're writing emails at the end of the day rather than at the beginning. Whew! We're tired, but had a good p-day. We had to make this one especially good!

All last week the district was making comments about how transfers were coming and how we'd been companions for a long time. Of course, it was on Elder Stout's and my minds too. My whooole mission has kinda been leading up to the days where the two of us would be companions, and I have no idea what's next. So of course, I got really nervous. Elder Stout had convinced himself that we were for sure staying together another transfer, but as I was sitting in my futon writing in my journal I realized there were only 5 or 6 pages left before the end of my green journal. "How fitting," I thought, "to finish this journal that I brought from home with the companion I brought from home." I mean, it's pretty poetic for our adventure to end the way that all truly great ones do: on the last page of a big leather bound book.

And so while he thought we had more time, I thought our time was up. But as I was praying during personal study, and reflected on our time together, I thought on the things that we have accomplished and on the things that we still wish to accomplish, and I felt a little pained. "There's so much good that a crazy companionship like ours could do..." I prayed fervently, "thy will be done... but if it's thy will, or if you can fit it into the plan, can we just do one more?"

We got a call from our district leader Elder Burch who after making a couple jokes about accidentally calling us during transfer calls..........
WE'RE STAYING. We're staying. We yelled and hugged for joy just like the day that we both got our mission calls! :D
The Lord has bigger plans for us than I had thought :) I can't wait for our upcoming adventures.

Well, times running out much faster than usual today, so I'll wrap up the good times we had this week :)

OUR FRIENDS:

Asako: Everyone's been asking about Asako. Elder T. Stout and I have also been asking about Asako. So, she's been meeting with the sisters, but only about once a week or every other week. They're doing their absolute best to meet with her, but she's become really busy and hasn't been able to talk much. She won't be able to make her baptismal date, which we're all pretty devastated about. We hope she's doing well, nobody really knows what's going on :\ Please keep praying for her.

Toshiki: He just lost his job and the seas are rougher than ever. :\ However, whenever he meets with us, we are able to share lessons with him and Yui and she is golden. When she's struggling, she finds a lot of comfort in our lessons on doctrine and from church videos.

Mark: We met with him and his mom instructed us to do a gospel lesson before we helped with homework, and it was AWESOME!!! He's doing just as well as ever, but wasn't able to meet other than that day :)

Bu: Has been unable to meet for several weeks, we're really worried about him again. :\ Prayers would be appreciated.

OUR SPLITS

Elder Snyder
You probably don't remember him, but he's my district leader from Narita :D Right now he's a traveling assistant going from area to area, but he had a huge impact on me back then, and now.  He's going home next week which I can't believe, but I've always been so blessed with my wonderful friends and leaders and learning so much from him once again was a dream come true. I saw many prayers answered as we went together to the college and the volunteer centers and made lots of progress in our community service.

So much fun just being together with another missionary I look up to so much. As usual, we got insane amounts of food. Kings sized Sukiya... each one of those bowls may be enough for 6 people. (Please forgive me Mark....)

Also, on the topic of food, Elder T. Stout and I boiled tinfoil udon noodles on our stove.... it seems way dangerous, but that's what the instructions said to do, and it turned out way oishii! :D

So, I want to site the scripture you sent me earlier :)
But first, a story:

Elder Stout and I were on our way to dinner at an indian curry restaurant, and we haven't found new students for our english class for a while, so partially as a joke we decided, "Let's not leave that place without a new student!" And so we went in with faith. Well, the waiter actually struck up a conversation and eventually we were able to invite him. He made sure he knew the address, took two different chirashis, invited his friend, asked for directions on a map app, gave us his facebook, and promised to come asking, "Tuesday at 7 o'clock, right?" About 5 times. Miracles!!

"11 But Ammon said unto him: I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God.
12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever."

We can't do anything in this work without the help of God. I wonder what would have happened if we hadn't decided to persue that course with anyone we chanced to meet at the restaurant! We may not have ever invited him. But the Lord sent him to us because our hearts were in the right place. :)

I love you so very much! :D Thank you for the wonderful thoughts and Scriptures!

Talk to you next week! :)

Niigata Zone Conference and Blitz

Dear Mama Stouto,

Man, I love that you can speak Japanese. I'm finding myself on a regular basis switching L's and R's, and beginning sentences in English only to realize that what I want to say isn't compatible with English grammar patterns and end up finishing in Japanese. Not to mention I just use a lot of Japanese words that are just mendokusai to say in English. (That means like, "a pain in the neck". But it's easier to say in Japanese!! ;)

I'm genki! :D I'm glad you got to see a couple of pics and videos from the zone conference and blitz, those nights were fantastic. As always, it was like the windows of heaven were just swung open and revelation was dumped out! It's amazing how something general enough for a large group of missionaries can be full of specific answers to personal prayers.

Then afterwords, everyone else went out to do some crazy dendo (or just streeting with lots of Book of Mormons and faith), but instead of that, we went to a hospital (Elder Ishikawa, Elder Broberg, and I) and visited a member's son. It was a really sweet opportunity and I made a great new friend. He's exactly what I would have been like as a Japanese High school student (Please notice the 3DS and Manga on his desk ;) I felt so blessed to be able to bear my testimony to him and make him smile and remember that God loves him :)

Yes, Toshiki's mom and little brothers are members already! They are an amazing support system. Right now, he and his girlfriend are doing fantastic! They're progressing so well. On the topic, here's a picture of our last lesson...................

IS THAT NATSUKASHII (nostalgic) OR WHAT?!?! Elder Li and I got one more run, and it was such an amazing night for me. I grew and learned so much from my old companion. He's become an even more amazing missionary than he was back in Shibuya. On the topic, we saw some amazing miracles this week.

I'm running low on time now, but to make a long story short, we felt prompted to go back to the college that we had a hard time getting into because President Nagano has been very clear that the future of our missionary work is going to be within Mission School. That through us helping the younger generation, we will be able to find Heavenly Father's prepared children in a non-threatening environment. So we went looking to make friends with someone who wanted to learn English, worried that they might ask us to leave, and instead at the door we ran into my old Eikaiwa student who asked us to come to his office, then introduced us to a number of his fellow teachers! It was a miracle of mass proportions that could change Sanjo as we know it, and we offered so many prayers of thanks. Please pray for the mission school and for the youth of Japan!!

We saw many other miracles as we met with Mark and he told us he's seriously thinking about becoming a missionary, but first getting baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was such a spiritual day, I can't explain it all.
Very simply I want to echo Elder Li's words. That sometimes we need to go back to Jerusalem and get the plates, even if going back is hard and scary, the Lord will protect us. And even if we don't know beforehand what we will do, the spirit will lead us :)

We had a car that day, so that was new!!
One last pic with a best friend who changed my life.

Awwww, I'm glad Hudson... well, not "remembers" me, but I'm glad that he knows who I am. Have you been making sure to let him smell my shoes so that he'll recognize me when I see him again? ;)

Elder T. Stout and I have been visiting a member named brother Yoshida every single week. He's been in really rough shape for quite some time. He's never able to get out or even really do lessons because he has so little energy, but hosting us at his house brings him so much joy. Even though he falls asleep a hundred times in each meeting, it's always really good for him :) Helps him feel really involved in the ward. It also helps him feel a lot of love. He always insists on pouring us cups of hot chocolate (usually so much water you can hardly taste the chocolate... ;) Anyway, all he can really do for us is show reruns of ancient seminary films cuz we can't watch anything else and he can't do anything but watch TV, and so I'm pretty versed in really old video clips. Some of them are hysterically bad ;)

Elder Stout and I celebrated some good ol' fashion Japanese Valentine's day with our "Kanshya chocolate" which you get from a friend to a friend. If we weren't missionaries, I'm sure it would be pretty demeaning to receive such a gift, but seeing as we're missionaries and got this from Mr. Cozy, it was a huge compliment ;)

The two of us have been staying relatively healthy, although we have found a few new favorite desserts here that we can't help but buy every P-Day.... (Yes, it is still the goal to lose a significant amount of weight. In my defense of this picture, I weigh a lot less than I did the day I left home ;)

Another pic that needed to be taken with another best friend who has changed my life forever. Having him at the apartment again was so much fun! :) What an outstanding Elder just like his companion.

And one more of us buying sushi with President Nagano after the big blitz! :D

We're having fun, seeing miracles, loving the work, and really afraid about transfer calls next week. Please pray we'll be together one more to see all of our good friend's baptisms together! Elder T. Stout is worried sick, I have to give him a warm glass of milk every night before bed. (That was a lie. Mugicha, but basically the same thing ;)

I love you so much Mama, thanks for your wonderful emails each week. Sorry this one was a little crazy and all over the place, that's how the week itself actually was though, so it works :)

Talk to you soon, love you and Dada!!!

One of my favorite weeks so far!

How are you doing?? :D It's so good to hear from you, as usual. I'm glad to hear that you had such a fantastic RootsTech Conference once again!! :D I can't wait to go with you one day. I love and miss Aunt Barbara so much too and am honored she still reads my email :) Shout out to you, easily one of my favorite aunts!! ;)

Sanjo is doing fantastic: this week we had some of the best lessons and meetings with our friends that I've ever seen, it was amazing!!!! :D

At the beginning of the week I got a call from my good friend Biraj!! Do you remember him from Urawa?  It just made me so happy to see him again.

Speaking of Restaurants, today we went to a nice place with our good friends the Okuzawas because it was Sister Okuzawa (Toshiki's mom)'s birthday! So much fun! Here's us by one of the cameras at the front desk

Here's us giving Toshiki the eye after he stole my iPad.

And his mother's reaction:

Toshiki is doing much better this week, and he and his fiancé had a fantastic lesson with us at church about the gospel of Jesus Christ. The whole ward is hoping for his baptism soon! (And so is he!)

The week progressed and we met with Mark in one of the best experiences we've ever had with mission school! As a mission we really focus on teaching people English and other courses that we are good at to help people on a broader scale. After helping Mark with his math (and introducing him to Khan Academy which helped me with my math ;) we finished all of his homework and had a wonderful lesson about using good words to uplift each other. He made a very firm commitment to use better words. What's more, his mom walked in and said, "You know, I really like this!" And insisted we come back anytime.
What's more, Mark shared a very frightening experience about losing his wallet in Niigata, a 40 minute train ride from home. His phone was dead, and all he could do was stand there and play his guitar hoping to earn just 500 yen or so so that he could make the ride home. It was dark and icy cold, and after an hour he had almost submitted to just sleep around the station before trying again in the morning. He's a 16-year-old-kid!! But, he didn't give up. He went, and he prayed to Heavenly Father, and he tried one more time. A moment later, some foreigners walked up and clapped loudly asking him to play other songs, and pretty soon he had 2000 yen, and a big group of new friends!!!! MIRACLES!!! :D Mark testified to us, and then showed us a song he wrote about the experience. He added enthusiastically, "You can listen to this one because it's gospel music!!

At Eikaiwa we had a very sweet older lady give us valentine cards! :) What a wonderful friend, Fumie san. I really appreciate all of the new Japanese grandmothers that I am finding as the weeks go on. The older generation here is my absolute favorite :)

BU!!!! WE HAD A FANTASTIC LESSON WITH HIM AND BROTHER HAN OVER SKYPE!!! We've found out that a Myanmar Book of Mormon is being translated, and until then we'll have a few other resources we can use to help him. But we reexplained the whole restoration and he is completely faithful and ready to accept everything we've taught him. Just like his own father, he wants to be baptized. It's going amazingly well with him, so please keep the prayers coming! :)

(That was on splits with Elder Manapori)

No pic, but we saw Asako at church and it had been so long because of her busy work and travel!!!! It was so great and she stayed for several hours (so did Toshiki and Yui!! :) We talked a lot and we're hoping to hear more, but she hasn't been able to meet with the sisters. However, she DID go to church last week in Urawa (my old area) and BORE HER TESTIMONY FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! She's making amazing progress, even without us there. Please keep praying!!

Alright, I'm about out of time, but I just want to say that this week has been absolutely wonderful. One of my favorite weeks so far :) I love you so much, and I miss you dearly. Things are going very well though, so don't worry about me :)

Also, we have surprise splits with Elder Clark and Elder Li tomorrow, so look forward to our adventures in next week's email! :D

Love you so much, hear from you soon :)
